“When the two hosts came within sight of one another”—each saw the other—“Moses’s companions said,” complaining to Moses and filled with sorrow, “We will surely be overtaken.” Moses “said,” reassuring them and informing them of his Lord’s true promise, “No indeed!” That is, the matter is not as you have said; you will not be overtaken. “My Lord is with me; He will guide me” to that which will save both me and you.

“So We revealed to Moses, ‘Strike the sea with your staff.’” He struck it, “and it split apart” into twelve paths, “and each part was like a mighty mountain.” Moses and his people then entered it.

“And We brought the others near there”—at that place. That is, We brought Pharaoh and his people near and caused them to enter the same path that Moses and his people had taken.

“And We saved Moses and all those with him.” They all completed the crossing and emerged; not one of them remained behind.

“Then We drowned the others.” Not one of them escaped drowning.

“Indeed, in that is a sign”—a tremendous sign attesting to the truth of what Moses (peace be upon him) brought and the falsity of what Pharaoh and his people followed. “Yet most of them were not believers,” despite these signs, which called for faith, because of the corruption of your hearts.

“Indeed, your Lord is truly the Almighty, the Most Merciful.” By His might, He destroyed the disbelievers who denied the truth, and by His mercy, He saved Moses and all those with him.
