Tafsir al-SadiAbd al-Rahman al-Sadi’

“Or do you think that most of them listen or understand? They are only like cattle—indeed, they have strayed even farther from the way.”

Allah Most High then affirmed the severity of their misguidance by declaring them devoid of reason and hearing, and likened them in their error to grazing cattle that hear nothing but calls and cries. Deaf, dumb, and blind, they do not understand. Indeed, they are more misguided than cattle, for cattle are guided by their shepherd and follow his lead; they recognize the path to their destruction and avoid it. Moreover, their ultimate fate is safer than that of these people. This makes it clear that those who accuse the Messenger of misguidance are more deserving of that description, and that every dumb beast is better guided than they are.
