(34) “Those who will be gathered on their faces into Hell—they are in a worse place and further astray from the way.”
The Exalted informs us of the condition of the polytheists who denied His Messenger and of their evil end. They “will be gathered on their faces” in the most hideous and appalling spectacle, as the angels of punishment drag and haul them “into Hell,” which encompasses every torment and punishment. “They”—those in this condition—“are in a worse place” than those who believe in Allah and affirm His messengers, “and further astray from the way.” This is an instance of employing the comparative form even though the other party possesses none of the quality in question. Indeed, the believers’ dwelling and settled abode are good: in this world they were guided to the straight path, and in the Hereafter they will be guided to reach the Gardens of Bliss.
