Tafsir al-SadiAbd al-Rahman al-Sadi’

(30–31) “And the Messenger will say, ‘O my Lord, my people have indeed abandoned this Quran. Thus We have appointed for every prophet an enemy from among the evildoers. Your Lord is sufficient as a guide and helper.’”

“And the Messenger will say,” calling upon his Lord, complaining to Him of his people’s rejection of what he brought, and grieving over their conduct: “O my Lord, my people,” to whom You sent me to guide them and convey the message, “have indeed abandoned this Quran.” That is, they turned away from it, forsook it, and left it behind, even though they were duty-bound to submit to its authority, attend to its rulings, and follow its guidance.

Consoling His Messenger and informing him that these people had predecessors who behaved as they did, Allah said: “Thus We have appointed for every prophet an enemy from among the evildoers”—those who are unfit for goodness and do not grow in purity through it. They oppose the prophets, reject their message, and dispute with them through falsehood.

Among the benefits of this is that truth prevails over falsehood and becomes manifest with the utmost clarity, for falsehood’s opposition to truth only increases the latter in clarity, lucidity, and strength of proof. It also reveals the honor Allah bestows upon the people of truth and the punishment He inflicts upon the people of falsehood. So do not grieve over them or let yourself perish in sorrow for them. “Your Lord is sufficient as a guide”: He guides you so that you attain what you seek and secure your religious and worldly welfare; “and helper”: He grants you victory over your enemies and wards off every harm from you in your religious and worldly affairs. Let Him therefore suffice you, and place your trust in Him.
