(46) “We have certainly sent down clear verses, and Allah guides whom He wills to a straight path.”
That is: We have indeed shown mercy to Our servants and sent down to them clear verses—verses whose meaning plainly establishes all the objectives of the Sacred Law, praiseworthy conduct, and sound knowledge. The paths have thereby been made clear, and right guidance distinguished from error, and guidance from misguidance. Not the slightest specious argument remains for an advocate of falsehood to cling to, nor the slightest ambiguity for anyone seeking what is right. For these verses are a revelation from the One whose knowledge, mercy, and exposition are perfect; after His clarification, no further clarification is possible. This leaves matters such that, thereafter, “whoever was to perish might perish upon clear proof, and whoever was to live might live upon clear proof.”
“And Allah guides whom He wills”—those for whom the decree of the best reward has already gone forth and an honorable standing has been established—“to a straight path”; that is, a clear and direct path leading to Him and to His abode of honor, encompassing knowledge of the truth, preferring it, and acting upon it.
He extended complete clarification to all creation, while singling out for guidance whomever He wills. This is His grace and beneficence, and the bounty of the Generous is never cut off. That is His justice, and it leaves no argument to anyone who would object. Allah knows best where to place His beneficence.
