Tafsir al-SadiAbd al-Rahman al-Sadi’

(50) “And We made the son of Mary and his mother a sign, and gave them refuge on high ground—a place of rest with flowing water.”

That is, We bestowed Our favor upon Jesus, son of Mary, and made him and his mother among Allah’s wondrous signs: she conceived him and gave birth to him without a father; he spoke in the cradle as an infant; and Allah brought about through him the signs that He did. “And We gave them refuge on high ground,” meaning an elevated place. This—and Allah knows best—was at the time she gave birth to him. “A place of rest,” meaning a place of settled repose and comfort, “with flowing water,” as indicated by His words: “Your Lord has placed beneath you”—that is, beneath the place where you are, because it was elevated—“a stream,” meaning a river, which is the flowing water. “Shake the trunk of the palm tree toward you, and it will drop fresh, ripe dates upon you. So eat, drink, and be comforted.”
