(21–22) “Indeed, in livestock there is a lesson for you. We give you drink from what is in their bellies; in them you have many benefits, and from them you eat. And upon them and upon ships you are carried.”
That is, among His blessings upon you is that He has subjected livestock to your service: camels, cattle, and sheep. In them is a lesson for those who reflect and benefits for those who make use of them. “We give you drink from what is in their bellies”—milk that emerges from between digested matter and blood, pure and pleasant to those who drink. “In them you have many benefits,” derived from their wool, camel hair, and other hair. He has also made for you, from ⦗550⦘ the hides of livestock, dwellings that you find light to carry both when you travel and when you camp. “And from them you eat” the finest foods: meat and fat.
“And upon them and upon ships you are carried.” That is, He made them like ships for you on land, upon which you carry your burdens to lands you could not otherwise reach except with tremendous hardship. Likewise, He made ships for you at sea, carrying you and your possessions, whether [it be] little or much. The One who has bestowed these blessings, diversified the forms of His kindness, and showered His abundant goodness upon us is the One who deserves perfect gratitude, perfect praise, diligent devotion in worshipping Him, and that His blessings never be used to assist in disobeying Him.
