(55–57) “Those who disbelieve will continue to doubt it until the Hour comes upon them suddenly or the punishment of a barren day comes upon them. Sovereignty that Day belongs to Allah; He will judge between them. Those who believe and do righteous deeds will be in Gardens of Bliss. But those who disbelieve and deny Our signs will have a humiliating punishment.”
Allah Most High informs us of the condition of the disbelievers: because of their stubbornness and aversion, they continue to doubt what you have brought them, O Muhammad, and they (1) persist unceasingly in this state ⦗543⦘ “until the Hour comes upon them suddenly”—that is, without warning—“or the punishment of a barren day comes upon them”—that is, a day containing no good, namely the Day of Resurrection. When the Hour comes upon them, or that Day overtakes them, those who disbelieved will know that they were liars. They will feel remorse when remorse can no longer benefit them, fall into despair, lose all hope of any good, and wish that they had believed in the Messenger and followed his path. This therefore warns them against persisting in their doubt and fabrication.
