(104–105) “On the Day when We roll up the heaven as a scribe rolls up a written scroll. Just as We began the first creation, We shall repeat it—a promise binding upon Us. We shall certainly do it. * We have indeed written in the Zabūr, after the Reminder, that the land shall be inherited by My righteous servants.”
Allah Most High states that, on the Day of Resurrection, He will roll up the heavens—despite their immense size and vast expanse—just as a scribe rolls up a scroll, meaning the sheet upon which he has written. Their stars will then be scattered, their sun and moon will be folded up, and they will be removed from their places.
“Just as We began the first creation, We shall repeat it”—that is, Our recreation of mankind will be like Our initial creation of them. Just as We first created them when they were nothing, so shall We restore them after their death.
“A promise binding upon Us. We shall certainly do it.” He will fulfill what He has promised, for His power is perfect and nothing is beyond Him.
“We have indeed written in the Zabūr”—that is, in written scripture; what is intended is the revealed Books, such as the Torah and others—“after the Reminder” ⦗532⦘. In other words, We wrote it in the revealed Books after having written it in the preceding Book: the Preserved Tablet, the Mother of the Book, with which every decree ordained thereafter accords. What is written therein is that “the land”—meaning the land of Paradise—“shall be inherited by My righteous servants”: those who fulfill what they are commanded and avoid what they are forbidden. They are the ones whom Allah will cause to inherit the Gardens, as the inhabitants of Paradise will say: “Praise be to Allah, Who has fulfilled His promise to us and made us inherit the land, so that we may settle wherever we wish in Paradise.”
It is also possible that what is meant is succession on earth: Allah will grant the righteous firm establishment on earth and give them authority over it, as He Most High says: “Allah has promised those of you who believe and do righteous deeds that He will surely grant them succession in the land, just as He granted it to those before them”—to the end of the verse.
