(98–103) “Indeed, you and whatever you worship besides Allah are fuel for Hell; you will enter it. Had these truly been gods, they would not have entered it. All will remain there forever. There they will groan, but they will hear nothing therein. As for those for whom the finest reward from Us has already been ordained, they will be kept far away from it.”
That is: You who worship other gods alongside Allah, together with them, are “fuel for Hell”—its fuel and firewood. “You will enter it,” as will your idols.
The wisdom in casting the idols into the Fire—even though they are inanimate, possess no understanding, and bear no sin—is to expose the falsehood of those who took them as gods and to intensify their punishment. Hence He says: “Had these truly been gods, they would not have entered it.” This is like the statement of Allah Most High: “So that He may make clear to them that over which they differed, and so that those who disbelieved may know that they were liars.” Both the worshippers and those they worshipped will remain there forever, never leaving it or being transferred elsewhere.
“There they will groan” because of the severity of the punishment, “but they will hear nothing therein.” They will be deaf, dumb, and blind; or the meaning is that they will hear no sound other than the sound of the Fire, because of its violent boiling, thunderous roaring, and raging fury.
The gods of the polytheists that will enter the Fire are only the idols, or anyone who was worshipped and was pleased with being worshipped.
As for the Messiah, Ezra, the angels, and others like them among the righteous servants who were worshipped, they will not be punished therein. They are included in His words: “As for those for whom the finest reward from Us has already been ordained”—that is, felicity had already been ordained for them in Allah’s knowledge and in the Preserved Tablet, and they were made ready in this world for the path of ease and for righteous deeds.
“They will be kept far away from it”—that is, from the Fire. They will neither enter it nor be near it; rather, they will be kept as far away from it as possible, so that they will neither hear its faintest sound nor catch sight of it.
