(115) “We had already made a covenant with Adam, but he forgot, and We found in him no firm resolve.”
That is, We instructed Adam, commanded him, and entrusted him with a covenant to uphold. He committed himself to it, submitted and complied, and firmly resolved to fulfill it. Yet despite this, he forgot what he had been commanded, and his firm resolve gave way. Thus, what befell him befell him, and he became a lesson for his descendants. Their natures became like his: Adam forgot, and so his descendants forget; he erred, and so they err. He did not remain steadfast in his firm resolve, and neither do they. Yet he hastened to repent of his sin, acknowledged it, and confessed it, so he was forgiven. Whoever takes after his father is not to be blamed.
