(113) “Thus We have sent it down as an Arabic Quran and presented its warnings in varied forms, so that they may become mindful of Allah or be prompted to take heed.”

That is, We have likewise sent down this Book in the noble Arabic tongue, which you understand and comprehend, so that neither its wording nor its meaning is obscure to you.

“We have presented its warnings in varied forms”—that is, We have set them forth in many different ways: at times by mentioning His Names that signify justice and retribution; at times by mentioning the exemplary punishments He inflicted upon earlier nations and commanding later nations to take warning from them; at times by mentioning the effects of sins and the defects they bring about; at times by mentioning the terrors of the Resurrection and all its alarming and distressing events; and at times by mentioning Hell and the various forms of punishment and torment it contains.

All of this is a mercy to His servants, so that they may fear Allah and abandon the evils and sins that harm them, “or be prompted to take heed,” and thus perform the acts of obedience and goodness that benefit them. The Quran’s being in Arabic and its warnings being presented in varied forms are among the greatest means and strongest incentives to attain mindfulness of Allah and perform righteous deeds. Had it not been in Arabic, or had its warnings not been presented in varied forms, it would not have produced this effect.
