(110) “Say, ‘I am only a human being like you. It has been revealed to me that your God is only One God. So whoever hopes to meet his Lord, let him perform righteous deeds and associate no one in the worship of his Lord.’”
That is: “Say,” O Muhammad, to the disbelievers and others: “I am only a human being like you.” In other words, I am not a god; I have no share in sovereignty, no knowledge of the unseen, and do not possess the treasuries of Allah. “I am only a human being like you,” a servant among the servants of my Lord. “It has been revealed to me that your God is only One God.” That is, I have been favored over you with the revelation Allah sends to me, the foremost message of which is to inform you that your God is One God: He has no partner, and no one besides Him deserves even an atom’s weight of worship. I call you to deeds that will draw you near to Him, secure His reward for you, and avert His punishment from you.
Thus, He said: “So whoever hopes to meet his Lord, let him perform righteous deeds”—deeds that accord with Allah’s law, whether obligatory or recommended—“and associate no one in the worship of his Lord.” That is, he must not perform his deeds to be seen by others, but must perform them sincerely for the sake of Allah Most High. The one who combines sincerity with adherence is the one who will attain what he hopes for and seeks. As for anyone else, he is a loser in this world and the Hereafter, and he has missed out on nearness to his Master and the attainment of His pleasure.
