Tafsir al-SadiAbd al-Rahman al-Sadi’

(36) “Do not pursue that of which you have no knowledge. Indeed, the hearing, the sight, and the heart—each of these will be questioned.”

That is: Do not follow what you have no knowledge of. Rather, ascertain the truth of everything you say and do, and do not imagine that it will pass without being counted either in your favor or against you. “Indeed, the hearing, the sight, and the heart—each of these will be questioned.” It therefore behooves a servant who knows that he will be questioned about what he said and did, and about how he employed the faculties Allah created for His worship, to prepare an answer for that questioning. This can only be done by employing them in servitude to Allah, devoting religion sincerely to Him, and restraining them from everything Allah Most High dislikes.
