The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said, “Between a servant and idolatry lies the abandonment of the prayer.” (1)
He also said, “The covenant that distinguishes us from them is the prayer; whoever abandons it has committed disbelief.” (2)
He further said, “Whoever deliberately abandons the prayer is no longer under Allah’s protection.” (3)
I say: In light of these Qur’anic and prophetic texts, the leading imams and scholars have differed regarding whether one who deliberately abandons the prayer is to be declared a disbeliever.
Imam al-Baghawi states in Sharḥ al-Sunnah (2/178–179): “The scholars have disagreed over declaring an intentional abandoner of the obligatory prayer an unbeliever.”
(6) 1. Reported by Muslim (no. 82) on the authority of Jabir. 2. Reported by Ahmad (5 / 346), al-Tirmidhi (no. 2623), Ibn Majah (no. 1079) and others on the authority of Buraydah. In his marginalia on Ibn Abi Shaybah’s Kitab al-Iman (p. 15), our teacher states: “Its chain is sound according to Muslim’s criteria.” 3. Reported by Ibn Majah (no. 4034), by al-Bukhari in al-Adab al-Mufrad (no. 18) and by others. Although its isnad is weak, it is strengthened by corroborating reports; see Ibn Hajar, al-Talkhis al-Habir, 2 / 148, and al-Albani, Irwa al-Ghalil, 7 / 89–91.
