—exalted is His word—illuminates the insight of the world’s sovereign so that he may perceive things as they truly are, strive for the life to come, and deal kindly with Allah’s servants and creatures. Within his dominion there are a million souls; if he is just toward them, every one of them becomes his intercessor, and if even a single believer among them intercedes for him, he will be safe from punishment on the Day of Resurrection. But should he wrong them, they will all stand against him as accusers. His fate will then hang in grave peril and extreme uncertainty, for when the would-be intercessor turns into an adversary, the affair grows all the more fraught.
