—pause to reflect until the ship had already set sail; it drew farther and farther away while they remained where they were, cut off and left behind, for they neither called out to the sailor nor heeded his warning. Some of them were devoured by wild beasts, torn apart by hyenas.
The first group—the ones who boarded early—are the believers, the God-fearing. Those who lagged behind and perished are the unbelievers and idolaters, those who forgot Allah and the Hereafter, surrendered themselves wholly to this world, and clung to it, just as the Almighty says: “That is because they preferred the life of this world over the Hereafter” (Quran 16:107). As for the middle company, they are the disobedient believers: they preserved the essence of faith but did not restrain their hands from the world. Some enjoyed their wealth and comfort, others sought their pleasure despite poverty and need—until their sins gained the upper hand and their impurities and burdens multiplied.
Ninth example: Abu Hurayrah narrated that the Prophet ﷺ said, “O Abu Hurayrah, would you like me to show you the reality of this world?” I replied, “Yes, Messenger of Allah.” He took my hand and walked with me until we came to a rubbish heap strewn with human skulls, the remnants of decayed bones, and rags torn and befouled by human filth. He said,
“O Abu Hurayrah, these heads you see were once like your own—filled with greed and tireless effort to amass the world. They hoped for long lives as you hope; they strove to hoard wealth and cultivate the earth as you strive. Today their bones have changed and their bodies have vanished, as you can see. These rags were the clothes in which they once preened themselves in youthful vanity and love of display; now the wind has tossed them into this refuse. And this filth was their delicious food, for which they schemed and from which they plundered one another; now they have cast it aside in a disgrace so foul that no one will approach it for its stench. Such, in sum, is the state of the world, as you behold it. Whoever wishes to weep over the world, let him weep, for it is truly a place for tears.”
Abu Hurayrah said, “All those present wept.”
Tenth example: In the time of Jesus—peace be upon him—three men were walking along a road
