Paradise whoever harbors even an atom’s weight of arrogance in his heart” (1); or, “Whoever cheats us is not one of us” (2); or, “Whoever claims descent from someone other than his father, or allies himself to anyone other than his patrons, Paradise is forbidden to him” (3); or, “Whoever deliberately swears a false oath in order to seize the wealth of a Muslim will meet Allah while He is angry with him” (4); or, “Whoever, by means of a false oath, deems it lawful to take the wealth of a Muslim—Allah has made the Fire obligatory for him and forbidden Paradise to him” (5); or, “A severer of kinship ties shall not enter Paradise” (6)—and there are many other hadiths of threat besides these.

It is therefore impermissible for us to single out a particular person who has committed one of these deeds and say, “This individual has incurred that specific threat,” for repentance and other causes that remove punishment remain possible.

(5) Reported by Muslim, p. 122, from Abu Umama with the wording: “Whoever usurps the right of a Muslim by means of a false oath, Allah has ordained the Fire for him and forbidden Paradise to him.” (6) Reported by Muslim (Sahih, p. 1981) and by al-Bukhari in al-Adab al-Mufrad; also by Ahmad, al-Bukhari, Abu Dawud and al-Tirmidhi with the wording: “The one who severs family ties shall not enter Paradise.”
