or we invoked the purport of his—peace and blessings be upon him—statement: “May Allah curse whoever drinks wine,” or “who is undutiful to his parents, or whoever shifts the boundary markers of land” (1); or, “May Allah curse the thief” (2); or, “May Allah curse the one who consumes usury, the one who pays it, its two witnesses, and its scribe” (3); or, “May Allah curse the one who withholds the prescribed sadaqa (charity) and anyone who transgresses with regard to it” (4); or, “Whoever commits an offence in Madinah or shelters an offender, upon him is the curse of Allah, the angels, and all people together” (5); or, “Whoever lets his garment drag out of arrogance, Allah will not look at him on the Day of Resurrection” (6); or, “He shall not enter…"
(1) Reported by Ahmad, Muslim, and al-Nasa’i on the authority of ‘Ali: “Allah has cursed anyone who curses his parents, anyone who sacrifices an animal for other than Allah, anyone who gives refuge to an evildoer, and anyone who shifts the boundary markers of the land.”
(2) Agreed upon (al-Bukhari and Muslim) from Abu Hurayra, with the wording: “Allah curses the thief who steals an egg and has his hand cut off, and who steals a rope and has his hand cut off.”
(3) Reported by al-Tabarani from Ibn Mas‘ud, and by Muslim from Jabir, with the wording: “The Messenger of Allah cursed the one who consumes usury … .”
(4) Reported by Ahmad in his Musnad through two chains; the first is weak because of al-Harith al-A‘war, while the second is sound. Its wording, from ‘Abd Allah, is: “Those who consume usury, its agent, its scribe, and its witnesses—if they knowingly participate—the tattooer and the one who is tattooed for the sake of beautification, the person who withholds the obligatory charity, and the one who returns to life as a Bedouin after having emigrated: all are cursed on the tongue of Muhammad on the Day of Resurrection.”
(5) Reported by Muslim (p. 995) from Anas; the complete text reads: “Allah will accept from him on the Day of Resurrection neither a compulsory act nor a voluntary offering. The covenant of the Muslims is one, and the least of them may grant it. Whoever claims affiliation to someone other than his father, or attaches himself to other than his masters, upon him is the curse of Allah, the angels, and all people, and Allah will accept from him on the Day of Resurrection neither a compulsory act nor a voluntary offering.”
(6) Reported by Ahmad, al-Bukhari, Muslim, and the compilers of the Sunan collections on the authority of Ibn ‘Umar.
