Rafʿ al-MalāmIbn Taimiya

And there is the ḥadith of Anas in which the Prophet ﷺ said, “The one who brings goods to market is granted provision, whereas the hoarder is accursed.” (1)

We have already mentioned the report that speaks of “three people to whom Allah will neither speak, nor look at, nor purify, and they will suffer a painful punishment,” among whom is “the one who withholds surplus water.”

He ﷺ also pronounced a curse upon the seller of wine, even though some of the early generations did in fact sell it.

It is likewise soundly transmitted through several chains that he said, “Whoever drags his lower garment out of arrogance, Allah will not look at him on the Day of Resurrection.” (2)

He also said, “There are three people whom Allah will neither speak to nor look at on the Day of Resurrection, nor purify, and they will have a painful punishment: the one who lets his garment trail, the braggart who reminds others of his favours, and the merchant who promotes his goods with false oaths.” (3) — even though a group

= Transmitted with a sound chain from Abu Hurayra, attributed to the Prophet: “Whoever has intercourse with a menstruating woman, or with a woman through her anal passage, or consults a kahin (soothsayer) and believes him, has disbelieved in what was revealed to Muhammad.” (1) Related by Ibn Majah, al-Hakim, and al-Darimi; the chain is weak. Muslim records in his Sahih, from Maʿmar, that the Messenger of Allah said: “Whoever hoards (commodities) is a khati (sinner).” The word khati denotes a disobedient wrong-doer, as in the Quranic verse: “None will eat it except the khatiun (sinners).” (2) Reported by Ahmad, al-Bukhari, Muslim, and the compilers of the Sunan collections on the authority of ʿAbd Allah b. ʿUmar b. al-Khattab. (3) Reported by Muslim, Abu Dawud, al-Nasaʾi, al-Tirmidhi, and Ibn Majah through the narration of Abu Dharr.
