So ʿUmar accepted her argument; he had memorized the verse but it had momentarily slipped his mind. Likewise, it is reported that on the Day of the Camel ʿAlī reminded al-Zubayr of something the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had entrusted to both of them, and he kept reminding him until al-Zubayr withdrew from the fighting. Such instances are frequent among the early and later generations.

The sixth cause:
A person’s failure to perceive the purport of the ḥadith.

Sometimes this happens because the term used in the ḥadith is unfamiliar to him, as with the words muzābanah, mukhābarah, and muḥāqalah.

…to you so as to pressure you into divorcing her. Yet if she has done nothing that makes divorce permissible, on what basis can you lawfully take any of her property?! (1) See Ibn Kathir, Al-Bidaya wa-l-Nihaya, vol. 7, p. 240; he reports the narration through several chains from Abu Ya‘la, al-Bayhaqi, and Abd al-Razzaq. (2) Al-muzabana: selling ripe dates still on the palm for dry dates already picked. The term derives from zabn (to push), suggesting that each party tries to outbid the other. It was prohibited because it easily involves deception and uncertainty. (3) Al-mukhabara: according to one view, share-cropping in which the landowner and farmer agree on a fixed share—such as one-third or one-quarter—of the harvest. (4) Al-muhaqala: opinions differ. The most common explanation is renting land for a set amount of wheat—what farmers today call muharatha. Others say it is share-cropping on a specified fraction of the yield, or selling grain still in its husk for cleaned wheat, or selling a crop before it ripens. It was forbidden because the produce is a measurable commodity, and sales of like for like must be equal and immediate, whereas here the quantities are unknown.
