Tafsir al-BaghawiAl-Baghawi

It was also said that it was given this name because all its conditions are joined with peace. At the beginning, it is said: “Enter it in peace, safe and secure.” (al-Hijr, 46) “The angels will enter upon them from every gate, saying: ‘Peace be upon you.’” (al-Ra‘d, 23) And He says: “They will hear therein no idle talk or sinful speech, only the greeting: ‘Peace, peace.’” (al-Waqi‘ah, 26) And He says: “Their greeting therein will be, ‘Peace.’” (Ibrahim, 23) “Peace—a word from a Merciful Lord.” (Ya-Sin, 58)

“And He is their Protector because of what they used to do.” Al-Husayn (1) ibn al-Fadl said: “He takes care of them in this world by granting them success, and in the Hereafter by rewarding them.”

His words, Exalted is He: “And on the Day He gathers them”: Hafs recited “He gathers them” with a third-person prefix. “All together”—that is, He will gather the jinn and humankind at the place of standing on the Day of Resurrection, and say: “O company of jinn”—the jinn intended here are the devils—“you have made great use of mankind”; that is, you made great use of mankind through misguidance and seduction: you led many astray. “Their human allies will say”—that is, the human allies of the devils, who obeyed them—“Our Lord, we benefited from one another.”

Al-Kalbi said: “Humankind’s benefit from the jinn was that, when a man travelled and stopped in a desolate land, fearing for himself because of the jinn, he would say: ‘I seek refuge in the chief of this valley from the foolish ones among his people.’ He would then spend the night under their protection.

“As for the jinn’s benefit from humankind, it was that they said: ‘We have become masters over humankind along with the jinn, so that they have sought refuge in us.’ Thus, they increased in prestige among their people and in self-importance. This is like His saying, Exalted is He: ‘There were men from humankind who sought refuge in men from the jinn, and so they only increased them in burden.’” (al-Jinn, 6)

It was also said that humankind’s benefit from the jinn consisted of the false reports, sorcery, and soothsaying that they conveyed to them; of their making attractive to them the things they desired; and of making the means to attain them easy. The jinn’s benefit from humankind was the latter’s obedience to them in the misguidance and acts of disobedience that they made attractive to them.

Muhammad ibn Ka‘b said: “It means the obedience of some of them to others and the agreement of some of them with [others] (2).”

“And we have reached the term You appointed for us”—that is, the Day of Resurrection and the raising from the dead. Allah, Exalted is He, will say: “The Fire is your abode”—your place of residence—“remaining therein forever, except as Allah wills.”

They differed concerning this exception just as they differed concerning His saying: “Remaining therein as long as the heavens and the earth endure, except as your Lord wills.” (Hud, 107)
