“Those who are mindful of Allah bear no responsibility whatsoever for their account; rather, it is a reminder, so that they may become mindful of Allah.” (69)
“And your people have denied it,” that is, the Quran; and it was also said: the punishment. “Though it is the truth. Say: ‘I am not appointed as a guardian over you’”—that is, as a watcher over you. It was also said: one empowered to compel you to accept Islam, whether you wish it or refuse. I am only a messenger.
“For every report”—that is, every account of the former generations—“there is an appointed fulfilment”: a reality and an ultimate end at which its truth is distinguished from its falsehood, and what is true in it from what is vain, whether in this world or in the Hereafter. “And you will come to know.”
Muqatil said: Every matter of which Allah gives news has a time [which He has fixed] (1) and a place in which it will occur, without fail or delay. Al-Kalbi said: [Every] (2) word and deed has a reality, whether in this world or in the Hereafter. As for what will be in this world, you will come to know it; and as for what will be in the Hereafter, it will become apparent to you.
