Tafsir al-BaghawiAl-Baghawi

“On the Day when Allah gathers the messengers and asks, ‘How were you answered?’ They will say, ‘We have no knowledge. Truly, You alone are the Knower of all that is unseen.’ (109)

When Allah will say, ‘O Jesus, son of Mary, remember My favor upon you and upon your mother: when I strengthened you with the Holy Spirit, so that you spoke to people in the cradle and in maturity; when I taught you the Book, wisdom, the Torah, and the Gospel; when you fashioned from clay the form of a bird by My leave, then breathed into it and it became a bird by My leave; when you healed the blind from birth and the leper by My leave; when you brought forth the dead by My leave; and when I restrained the Children of Israel from harming you, when you came to them with clear proofs, whereupon those among them who disbelieved said, “This is nothing but manifest magic.” (110)

And when I inspired the disciples, “Believe in Me and in My Messenger.” They said, “We believe; bear witness that we are Muslims.” (111)’

His saying, exalted is He, “On the Day when Allah gathers the messengers”: this is the Day of Resurrection. “And asks, ‘How were you answered?’” That is: How did your communities answer you? What response did your people give you when you called them to affirm My oneness and obey Me? “They will say”—that is, they will say—“We have no knowledge.” Ibn Abbas said: Its meaning is, We possess no knowledge beyond that knowledge of which You know more than we do. It was also said: We do not know the wisdom behind Your asking us about a matter of which You know more than we do. Ibn Jurayj said: We have no knowledge of the ultimate outcome of their affair and of what they introduced after us. The evidence for this is His saying, “Truly, You alone are the Knower of all that is unseen”: that is, You are the One who knows what is hidden, whereas we know only what we witness.

Then, when I recognize them, they will be pulled away from me, and I will say, ‘My Companions!’ It will be said:”
