Yaʿqub recited tarjiʿūna (“you return”) throughout the Quran, with the initial yāʾ and the tāʾ bearing fatḥah, in the active form.
His saying, exalted is He: “He is the One Who created for you all that is on earth; then He turned to the heaven and formed them into seven heavens. And He is Knowing of all things.”
“Created for you all that is on earth” means: so that you may reflect and draw evidence from it. It is also said: so that you may benefit from it. “Then He turned to the heaven”: Ibn ʿAbbās and most of the early exegetes said: that is, He rose to the heaven. Ibn Kaysān, al-Farrāʾ, and a group of grammarians said: that is, He turned to the creation of the heaven. It is also said: He intended it, for He created the earth first and then proceeded to create the heaven. “And formed them into seven heavens” means: He created them level and even, with no gaps or cracks in them. “And He is Knowing of all things.”
Abū Jaʿfar, Abū ʿAmr, al-Kisāʾī, and Qālūn recited the pronouns huwa (“he”) and hiya (“she/it”) with the hāʾ unvowelled when it is preceded by a wāw, fāʾ, or lām. Al-Kisāʾī and Qālūn additionally recited thumma huwa (“then he”), while Qālūn also recited an yumilla huwa (“that he dictate himself”) (al-Baqarah 2:282).
