Abd al-Wahid ibn Ahmad al-Mulayhi informed us; Ahmad ibn Abd Allah al-Nu'aymi informed us; Muhammad ibn Yusuf informed us; Muhammad ibn Isma'il informed us; Qutaybah informed us; al-Layth informed us, from Yazid ibn Abi Habib, from Abu al-Khayr, from Abd Allah ibn Amr, that a man asked the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, “Which aspect of Islam is best?” He replied: “That you feed others and offer the greeting of peace to those you know and those you do not know.” (1)
The meaning of his words, “Which aspect of Islam is best?” is: which of the qualities of Islam is best.
It has also been said that the words, “Return it with one better than it,” mean: if the one who offers the greeting is a Muslim; “or return it in like manner,” if he is not a Muslim.
Abu al-Hasan al-Sarakhsi informed us; Zahir ibn Ahmad informed us; Abu Ishaq al-Hashimi informed us; Abu Mus'ab informed us, from Malik, from Abd Allah ibn Dinar, from Abd Allah ⦗92a⦘ ibn Umar, may Allah be pleased with them, who said: The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said: “When one of the Jews greets you, he only says, ‘Death be upon you’; so say, ‘Upon you.’” (2)
His saying, exalted is He: “Indeed, Allah is ever Reckoner over all things”—that is, regarding everything, including returning a greeting with its like or with one better than it. “Reckoner” means One who calls to account and recompenses. Mujahid said: “Preserver.” Abu Ubaydah said: “Sufficient.” One says, “This is enough for me,” meaning: it suffices me.
