“Indeed, those who disbelieve in Our signs—We shall make them enter a Fire. Whenever their skins are burned through, We shall replace them with other skins so that they may taste the punishment. Surely Allah is Almighty, All-Wise.” (56)
Allah, Exalted is He, says: “Indeed, those who disbelieve in Our signs—We shall make them enter a Fire”: that is, We shall admit them into a Fire. “Whenever their skins are burned through”—that is, consumed by fire—“We shall replace them with other skins,” other than the skins that have been burned. Ibn Abbas, may Allah be pleased with him, said: “They will be replaced with white skins like sheets of paper.”
It is related that this verse was recited in the presence of Umar, may Allah be pleased with him. Umar said to the reciter, “Repeat it,” so he repeated it. Muadh ibn Jabal was with him, and Muadh said, “I know its interpretation: they are replaced one hundred times in an hour.” Umar, may Allah be pleased with him, said, “This is how I heard the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, say it.” (1)
Al-Hasan said: “The Fire consumes them seventy thousand times every day. Whenever it consumes them, they are told, ‘Return,’ and they return as they were.”

Ismail ibn Abd al-Qahir informed us; Abd al-Ghafir ibn Muhammad informed us; Muhammad ibn Isa al-Juludi informed us; Ibrahim ibn Muhammad ibn Sufyan informed us; Muslim ibn al-Hajjaj informed us; Shurayh ibn Yunus informed us; Humayd ibn Abd al-Rahman informed us, from al-Hasan ibn Salih, from Harun ibn Sad, from Abu Hazim, from Abu Hurayrah, may Allah be pleased with him, who said: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: “The molar tooth—or canine tooth—of the disbeliever will be like Mount Uhud, and the thickness of his skin will be a three-day journey.” (3)
If it is asked: How can skins that did not exist in this world and did not disobey Him be punished?
It is said: The original skin is restored on every occasion.
He only said, “other skins,” because their qualities are changed—just as you might say, “I made another ring from my ring.” The second ring is the first one, except that its workmanship and appearance have changed. Likewise, when someone leaves his brother in good health, then after some time sees him seriously ill, he says:
