Saʿīd ibn Jubayr said: “This refers to concealing knowledge.” (1)
Ibn ʿAbbās, may Allah be pleased with him, and Ibn Zayd said: It was revealed concerning Kardam ibn Zayd, Huyayy ibn Akhtab, Rifāʿah ibn Zayd ibn al-Tābūt, Usāmah ibn Habīb, Nāfiʿ ibn Abī Nāfiʿ, and Bahrī ibn ʿAmr. They would visit and associate with some men of the Ansār, saying, “Do not spend your wealth, for we fear poverty for you, and you do not know what may happen.” So Allah Most High revealed this verse: “And they conceal what Allah has given them of His bounty”—that is, wealth. It has also been said that it means that they withhold charity—“and We have prepared for the disbelievers a humiliating punishment.” (2)

قَالَ سَعِيدُ بْنُ جُبَيْرٍ: هَذَا فِي كِتْمَانِ الْعِلْمِ (١) .
وَقَالَ ابْنُ عَبَّاسٍ ﵄ وَابْنُ زَيْدٍ: نَزَلَتْ فِي كَرَدْمِ بْنِ زَيْدٍ وَحُيَيِّ بْنِ أَخْطَبَ وَرِفَاعَةَ بْنِ زَيْدِ بْنِ التَّابُوتِ وَأُسَامَةَ بْنِ حَبِيبٍ وَنَافِعِ بْنِ أَبِي نَافِعٍ وَبَحْرِيِّ بْنِ عَمْرٍو كَانُوا يَأْتُونَ رِجَالًا مِنَ الْأَنْصَارِ وَيُخَالِطُونَهُمْ فَيَقُولُونَ لَا تُنْفِقُوا أَمْوَالَكُمْ فَإِنَّا نَخْشَى عَلَيْكُمُ الْفَقْرَ وَلَا تَدْرُونَ مَا يَكُونُ فَأَنْزَلَ اللَّهُ تَعَالَى هَذِهِ الْآيَةَ: (٢) ﴿وَيَكْتُمُونَ مَا آتَاهُمُ اللَّهُ مِنْ فَضْلِهِ﴾ يَعْنِي الْمَالَ، وَقِيلَ: يَعْنِي يَبْخَلُونَ بِالصَّدَقَةِ ﴿وَأَعْتَدْنَا لِلْكَافِرِينَ عَذَابًا مُهِينًا﴾
