Zahir ibn Ahmad informed us: Abu Ishaq al-Hashimi related to us; Abu Mus'ab related to us, from Malik, from Abu al-Zinad, from al-A'raj, from Abu Hurayrah, may Allah be pleased with him, that the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said: “A woman and her paternal aunt must not be joined in marriage, nor a woman and her maternal aunt.” (1)
Allah’s words, “except for what has already passed,” mean: rather, what has passed is pardoned, because they used to do this before Islam. Ata' and al-Suddi said: This excludes what Jacob, peace be upon him, did, for he was married to Leah, the mother of Judah, and Rachel, the mother of Joseph; they were sisters. “Indeed, Allah is ever Forgiving, Most Merciful.”
