and his prophethood, understanding miserliness here to mean concealing knowledge. (1) This is as He says in Surat al-Nisa:
“Those who are miserly, enjoin miserliness upon others, and conceal what Allah has given them of His bounty.” (al-Nisa 4:37)
The meaning of His words, “They will be encircled by what they withheld on the Day of Resurrection,” is that they will bear its burden and sin, as in His saying:
“While they bear their burdens upon their backs.” (al-An‘am 6:31)
“And to Allah belongs the inheritance of the heavens and the earth”: that is, He is the Everlasting One who remains after His creation has perished and their possessions have passed away. They die, and He inherits from them. Similar to this is His saying:
“Indeed, it is We who will inherit the earth and whoever is upon it.” (Maryam 19:40)
“And Allah is All-Aware of what you do.” The scholars of Basra and Mecca recited it in the third person: “what they do,” while the others recited it in the second person: “what you do.”
