Tafsir al-BaghawiAl-Baghawi

he put on a red turban and began to strut. The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said: “This is a manner of walking that Allah Most High detests, except in such a situation.” With it, Abu Dujanah split the heads of the polytheists, and the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, and his Companions charged the polytheists and defeated them.

It is related from al-Bara’ ibn Azib that he said: “By Allah, I saw the women fleeing, their anklets and legs exposed as they lifted their garments.” The companions of Abdullah ibn Jubayr said: “The spoils, by Allah! Let us go to the others and take our share of the spoils.” But when they went to them, they were driven back.

Al-Zubayr ibn al-Awwam said: “I saw Hind and her companions fleeing and climbing the mountain, with their anklets exposed; nothing stood between us and seizing them.” When the archers saw that the enemy had been routed and saw their companions plundering the spoils, they came down, seeking booty.

When Khalid ibn al-Walid saw how few archers remained, that the Muslims were occupied with the spoils, and that their rear was unguarded, he called out to his cavalrymen among the polytheists. He then attacked the Companions of the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, from behind, defeating and killing them. Abdullah ibn Qami’ah struck the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, with a stone (1), breaking his nose and one of his incisors and wounding his face. This weakened him, and his Companions scattered from around him.

The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, then went up toward a rock which he sought to climb. He was wearing two coats of mail and was unable to do so, so Talhah sat beneath it, and he climbed up until he was upon it. The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said: “Talhah has secured Paradise.” (2)

Hind and the women with her fell upon the slain Companions of the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, mutilating them and cutting off their ears and noses, until Hind made necklaces from them and gave them to Wahshi. She then cut open Hamzah’s liver and chewed it, but could not swallow it, so she spat it out.

Abdullah ibn Qami’ah advanced intending to kill the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace. Musab ibn Umayr—who bore the banner of the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace—defended the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, but Ibn Qami’ah killed him, believing that he had killed the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace. He returned to the polytheists and said: “I have killed Muhammad.” A caller then cried out: “Indeed, Muhammad has been killed!” It is said that this caller was Satan. The people then fell back, while the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, called out: “Come to me, servants of Allah! Come to me, servants of Allah!” (3)

Thirty men gathered around him and protected him until they drove the polytheists away from him. Sad ibn Abi Waqqas continued shooting until the tip of his bow broke, and the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, emptied his quiver for him, saying: “Shoot! May my father and mother be ransomed for you.” Abu Talhah was a man who shot with great force, and on that day he broke two or three bows. Whenever a man passed by carrying a quiver of arrows, the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, would say: “Empty it out for Abu Talhah.” Whenever Abu Talhah shot, the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, would raise himself up to look at where his arrows fell.

The hand of Talhah ibn Ubaydillah was wounded and became withered when he used it to shield the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace. And the eye of Qatadah ibn
