But when one of his Companions related something to me, I would ask him to swear an oath; if he swore to me, I would accept his word. Abu Bakr—and Abu Bakr spoke the truth—told me that he heard the Messenger of Allah say: ‘There is no believing servant who commits a sin, then performs his ablution well, rises and prays, and then seeks Allah’s forgiveness, except that Allah forgives him.’” Abu Isa narrated it from Qutaybah, from Abu Awanah, adding: Then he recited: “And those who, when they commit an indecency or wrong themselves...” the verse. Then he remained for as long as Allah willed, after which he committed another sin and said, ‘My Lord, I have committed a sin, so forgive it for me.’ His Lord, exalted is He, said: ‘My servant knows that he has a Lord who forgives sin and holds one accountable for it.
