Zur‘ah, from Kharashah ibn al-Hurr, from Abu Dharr—may Allah be pleased with him—from the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, who said: “There are three whom Allah will not speak to on the Day of Resurrection, nor look upon, nor purify; and theirs will be a painful punishment.” The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, recited this three times. Abu Dharr said, “They are ruined and lost! Who are they, O Messenger of Allah?” He said: “The one who lets his lower garment hang below his ankles; the one who reminds others of his favors; and the one who promotes his merchandise by false oaths.” (1) In one narration: “The one who lets his waist-wrapper hang below his ankles.”
The Imam Abu Ali al-Husayn ibn Muhammad al-Qadi informed us; Usayd, Abu al-Hasan Muhammad ibn al-Husayn al-Alawi, informed us; Abu Nasr Muhammad ibn Hamdawayh al-Marwazi informed us; Sufyan ibn Uyaynah informed us, from Amr ibn Dinar, from Abu Salih, from Abu Hurayrah, from the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, who said: “There are three whom Allah will not speak to on the Day of Resurrection, nor look upon, nor purify; and theirs will be a painful punishment: a man who swears an oath concerning a Muslim’s property and thereby appropriates it; a man who, after the Asr prayer, swears a false oath that he had been offered more for his merchandise than he was actually offered, while he is lying; and a man who withholds the surplus of his property. For Allah Most High says: ‘Today I shall withhold from you the surplus of that which your hands did not produce.’” (2)
