Surah al-A‘la is Makkan (1).
In the Name of Allah, the Most Compassionate, the Most Merciful.
“Glorify the Name of your Lord, the Most High.”
“Glorify the Name of your Lord, the Most High” means (2): say, “Glory be to my Lord, the Most High.” A group of the Companions and the Successors held this view.
Ahmad ibn Ibrahim al-Shurayhi informed us; Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn Ibrahim al-Tha‘labi informed us; Abdullah ibn Hamid informed us; Ahmad ibn Abdullah informed us; Muhammad ibn Abdullah related to us; Abdullah ibn Umar ibn Aban related to us; Waki‘ related to us, from Isra’il, from Abu Ishaq, from Muslim ibn al-Batin, from Sa‘id ibn Jubayr, from Ibn Abbas, that when the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, recited, “Glorify the Name of your Lord, the Most High,” he would say: “Glory be to my Lord, the Most High.” (3)
Others said: Its meaning is: declare your Lord, the Most High, free of what the heretics ascribe to Him; they regarded the word “name” as supplementary. This is cited as evidence by those who hold that the name and the thing named are one and the same, since no one says, “Glory be to the name of Allah,” or, “Glory be to the name of our Lord.” Rather, one says, “Glory be to Allah,” and, “Glory be to our Lord.” Thus, the meaning of “Glorify the Name of your Lord, the Most High” is: glorify your Lord.
