Tafsir al-BaghawiAl-Baghawi

“Those messengers—We favored some of them above others. Among them were those to whom Allah spoke, and He raised some of them in rank. We gave Jesus, son of Mary, clear proofs and strengthened him with the Holy Spirit. Had Allah willed, those who came after them would not have fought one another after the clear proofs had come to them; but they differed: some of them believed, and some of them disbelieved. Had Allah willed, they would not have fought one another, but Allah does whatever He wills. (253)

O you who believe, spend from what We have provided for you before there comes a Day in which there will be neither trade, nor close friendship, nor intercession. And the disbelievers—they are the wrongdoers. (254)”

“Those messengers—We favored some of them above others. Among them were those to whom Allah spoke”: that is, Allah Most High spoke to him—meaning Moses, peace be upon him. “And He raised some of them in rank”: meaning Muhammad, may Allah bless him and grant him peace.

The shaykh, the imam, may Allah have mercy on him, said: No prophet was given a sign without our Prophet having been given the like of that sign; and he was favored above the others by signs such as the splitting of the moon at his gesture, the yearning of the palm trunk at being separated from him, the stone and the tree greeting him, the speech of beasts and their testimony to his messengership, water gushing forth from between his fingers, and other miracles and signs too numerous to be counted. Foremost among them was the Quran, the like of which those in heaven and on earth were incapable of producing.
