“Have the disbelievers been recompensed for what they used to do?” (36)
Allah, exalted is He, says: “Have the disbelievers been recompensed”—that is, have they been repaid—“for what they used to do?” That is, with the recompense for their mockery of the believers. The interrogative here serves to affirm. Thuwiba (was recompensed), uthība (was rewarded) (1), and athāba (rewarded) carry the same meaning.
(1) The text between the brackets is omitted in manuscript B.
