Abu Bakr Muhammad ibn Abdullah ibn Abi Tawbah al-Kushmīhanī informed us; Abu Tahir Muhammad ibn Ahmad ibn al-Harith informed us; Muhammad ibn Ya‘qub al-Kisā’ī narrated to us; Abdullah ibn Mahmud narrated to us; Ibrahim ibn Abdullah al-Khallal narrated to us; Abdullah ibn al-Mubarak narrated to us, from Abd al-Rahman ibn Yazid ibn Jabir, who said: [Sulaym ibn Amir narrated to me:] (2) Al-Miqdad, a Companion of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, narrated to me, saying: I heard the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, say:
“When the Day of Resurrection comes, the sun will be brought near to people until it is ⦗187/A⦘ [at the distance of] (3) one or two miles.” Sulaym said: “I do not know which of the two meanings of ‘mile’ he meant: the distance measured on the ground, or the kohl-stick used to apply kohl to the eye.” He said: “The sun will scorch them, and they will be immersed in sweat in accordance with their deeds. Among them will be one whom it reaches up to his ankles, another whom it reaches up to his knees, another whom it reaches up to his waist, and another whom it completely bridles.” I saw the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, pointing with his hand toward his mouth and saying: “It completely bridles him.” (4)
