Tafsir al-BaghawiAl-Baghawi

Ibn ‘Abbas said: “On the Day of Resurrection (1), Allah will wind up the sun, the moon, and the stars in the sea. Then He will send against them a westerly wind, which will strike them, and they will become fire” (2).

‘Abd al-Wahid al-Mulayhi informed us; Ahmad ibn ‘Abdullah al-Nu‘aymi informed us; Muhammad ibn Yusuf informed us; Muhammad ibn Isma‘il related to us; Musaddad related to us; ‘Abd al-‘Aziz ibn al-Mukhtar related to us; ‘Abdullah al-Danaj related to us; Abu Salamah ibn ‘Abd al-Rahman related to me from Abu Hurayrah, from the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, who said: “The sun and the moon will be wound up on the Day of Resurrection” (3).

“And when the stars fall, scattering (2); and when the mountains are set in motion (3); and when full-term she-camels are neglected (4); and when the wild beasts are gathered together (5); and when the seas are set ablaze (6).”

“And when the stars fall, scattering”: that is, they will scatter from the sky and fall upon the earth. It is said, “The bird has fallen,” meaning that it has fallen from its nest. Al-Kalbi and ‘Ata’ said: “On that Day, the sky will rain down stars, and not a single star will remain without falling.”

“And when the mountains are set in motion”: they will be uprooted (4) over the face of the earth and become scattered dust (5).

“And when full-term she-camels are neglected”: these are pregnant she-camels that have reached ten months of pregnancy; the singular is a full-term she-camel. They continue to be called by this name until they give birth at the completion of a year. They were the most precious wealth in the eyes of the Arabs. “Neglected” means that they will be left unattended (6), without a herdsman, their owners having abandoned them. Their owners had been constantly devoted to them, and possessed no wealth more beloved to them than these, but they will neglect them because of the terrors of the Day of Resurrection that will confront them.

“And when the wild beasts”—that is, the land animals—“are gathered together”: they will be assembled after being raised, so that justice may be done among them. ‘Ikrimah narrated from Ibn ‘Abbas that he said: “Their gathering is their death.” He also said: “The gathering of everything is death, except for the jinn and humankind, for they will be made to stand on the Day of Resurrection.” Ubayy ibn Ka‘b said: “They will intermingle.”

“And when the seas are set ablaze”: the reciters of Mecca and Basra read it with an ungeminated consonant, while the rest read it with a geminated one. Ibn ‘Abbas said: “They will be kindled and become a blazing fire.” Mujahid and Muqatil said: “This means that their waters will burst into one another—the fresh water
