you were: become dust.” Then, whenever the disbeliever looks at something that has become dust, he will wish and say: “Would that I had been, in this world, in the form of a pig, and were dust today.”
Abu al-Zinad Abdullah ibn Dhakwan (1) said: “When Allah has judged between the people, commanded the people of Paradise to Paradise and the people of the Fire to the Fire, and said to the rest of the nations and to the believing jinn, ‘Return to dust,’ they will return to dust. Then the disbeliever will say: ‘Would that I were dust.’” This was also the view of Layth ibn Abi Sulaym (2): the believing jinn will return to dust. (3)
It was also said that the disbeliever here is Iblis. (4) This is because he disparaged Adam for having been created from dust and boasted that he himself had been created from fire. Then, when he sees on the Day of Resurrection the reward and mercy granted to Adam and his believing descendants, and the severity and punishment in which he himself is, he will say: “Would that I were dust.” Abu Hurayrah said: Then the dust will say, “No—and there is no honor for you! Who made you like me?”
