Tafsir al-BaghawiAl-Baghawi

“Indeed, the God-fearing will have salvation: gardens and grapevines, young women with well-rounded breasts, equal in age, and a brimming cup. There they will hear neither idle talk nor denial—a reward from your Lord, a gift in full measure—the Lord of the heavens and the earth and all that lies between them, the Most Merciful. None will have the power to address Him.” (31–37)

“So taste,” that is, it will be said to them: “So taste; We shall increase you in nothing but punishment.”

Allah, exalted is He, says: “Indeed, the God-fearing will have salvation”: triumph and deliverance from the Fire. Al-Dahhak said: “A place of recreation.”

“Gardens and grapevines”: meaning the trees and fruits of Paradise. “Young women with well-rounded breasts”: maidens whose breasts have become rounded; the singular is kāʿib. “Equal in age”: alike in age.

“And a brimming cup.” Ibn Abbas, al-Hasan, Qatadah, and Ibn Zayd said: “Overflowing and filled.” Sa'id ibn Jubayr and Mujahid said: “Successive.” Ikrimah said: “Clear.”

“There they will hear neither idle talk”: no vain speech, “nor denial”: that is, no one will deny another. Al-Kisa'i recited kidhāban with a single dhāl, as a verbal noun denoting mutual denial. It was also said that it means lying, and it was said that it carries the meaning of denial, like the recitation with the doubled consonant. (1)

“A reward from your Lord, a gift in full measure”: that is, He rewarded them with a reward and granted them a gift “in full measure,” meaning sufficient and complete. One says, “I gave so-and-so enough,” meaning: I gave him what sufficed him, until he said, “That is enough for me.” Ibn Qutaybah said: “A gift in full measure” means abundant. (2) It was also said that it is a reward commensurate with their deeds.

“The Lord of the heavens and the earth and all that lies between them, the Most Merciful.” The people of the Hijaz and Abu Amr recited Rabb (Lord) in the nominative case, as a new clause, with al-Rahman (the Most Merciful) as its predicate. The others recited it in the genitive case, following the phrase “from your Lord.” Ibn Amir read,
