“Eat and drink in bliss for what you used to do.” (43) Thus do We reward those who excel in good. (44) Woe, that Day, to the deniers! (45) Eat and enjoy yourselves for a little while; indeed, you are criminals. (46) Woe, that Day, to the deniers! (47) When they are told, “Bow down,” they do not bow down. (48) Woe, that Day, to the deniers! (49) So in what message after this will they believe? (50)

And they will be told, “Eat and drink in bliss for what you used to do”—that is, for your obedience to Me in this world.

“Thus do We reward those who excel in good. Woe, that Day, to the deniers!”

Then He said to the disbelievers of Mecca: “Eat and enjoy yourselves for a little while” in this world; “indeed, you are criminals”: associating partners with Allah and deserving punishment. “Thus do We reward those who excel in good. Woe, that Day, to the deniers! When they are told, ‘Bow down’”—that is, pray—“they do not bow down”: they do not pray. Ibn Abbas, may Allah be pleased with them both, said: “This will only be said to them on the Day of Resurrection, when they are called to prostrate but are unable to do so.” “Woe, that Day, to the deniers! So in what message after this”—after the Quran—“will they believe,” if they do not believe in it?
