“And during the night, prostrate to Him and glorify Him through the long night. (26) These people love this fleeting life and leave a heavy Day behind them. (27) It is We who created them and gave them strong constitutions; and, if We so willed, We could replace them completely with others like them. (28)”

“And remember the Name of your Lord morning and evening; and during the night, prostrate to Him” [that is, the Maghrib and ‘Isha’ prayers] (1). “And glorify Him through the long night” means voluntary prayer after the obligatory prayer.

“These people” refers to the disbelievers of Mecca. “Love this fleeting life” means the transient abode, namely this world. “And leave behind them” means ahead of them “a heavy Day”—a severe Day, namely the Day of Resurrection. That is, they neglect it: they neither believe in it nor act in preparation for it.

“It is We who created them and gave them strength” [that is, We made strong and perfected] (2) “their constitutions.” Mujahid, Qatadah, and Muqatil (3) said: “their constitutions” means their creation. One says, “A man of fine constitution,” meaning, fine form.

Al-Hasan said: It means their limbs, joined one to another by veins and sinews.

﴿وَمِنَ اللَّيْلِ فَاسْجُدْ لَهُ وَسَبِّحْهُ لَيْلًا طَوِيلًا (٢٦) إِنَّ هَؤُلَاءِ يُحِبُّونَ الْعَاجِلَةَ وَيَذَرُونَ وَرَاءَهُمْ يَوْمًا ثَقِيلًا (٢٧) نَحْنُ خَلَقْنَاهُمْ وَشَدَدْنَا أَسْرَهُمْ وَإِذَا شِئْنَا بَدَّلْنَا أَمْثَالَهُمْ تَبْدِيلًا (٢٨) ﴾ ﴿وَاذْكُرِ اسْمَ رَبِّكَ بُكْرَةً وَأَصِيلًا وَمِنَ اللَّيْلِ فَاسْجُدْ لَهُ﴾ [يَعْنِي صَلَاةَ الْمَغْرِبِ وَالْعِشَاءِ] (١) ﴿وَسَبِّحْهُ لَيْلًا طَوِيلًا﴾ يَعْنِي التَّطَوُّعَ بَعْدَ الْمَكْتُوبَةِ. ﴿إِنَّ هَؤُلَاءِ﴾ يَعْنِي كُفَّارَ مَكَّةَ ﴿يُحِبُّونَ الْعَاجِلَةَ﴾ أَيِ الدَّارَ الْعَاجِلَةَ وَهِيَ الدُّنْيَا. ﴿وَيَذَرُونَ وَرَاءَهُمْ﴾ يَعْنِي أَمَامَهُمْ ﴿يَوْمًا ثَقِيلًا﴾ شَدِيدًا وَهُوَ يَوْمُ الْقِيَامَةِ. أَيْ يَتْرُكُونَهُ فَلَا يُؤْمِنُونَ بِهِ وَلَا يَعْمَلُونَ لَهُ. ﴿نَحْنُ خَلَقْنَاهُمْ وَشَدَدْنَا﴾ [قَوَّيْنَا وَأَحْكَمْنَا] (٢) ﴿أَسْرَهُمْ﴾ قَالَ مُجَاهِدٌ وَقَتَادَةُ [وَمُقَاتِلٌ] (٣) "أَسْرَهُمْ" أَيْ: خَلْقَهُمْ، يُقَالُ: رَجُلٌ حَسَنُ الْأَسْرِ، أَيِ: الْخَلْقِ. وَقَالَ الْحَسَنُ: يَعْنِي أَوْصَالَهُمْ بَعْضَهَا إِلَى بَعْضٍ بِالْعُرُوقِ وَالْعَصَبِ.
