Tafsir al-BaghawiAl-Baghawi

“But no! You love the fleeting life (20) and neglect the Hereafter. (21) On that Day there will be radiant faces, (22) looking at their Lord.” (23)

Regarding His saying, “It is for Us to gather it and recite it,” he said: It is for Us to gather it in your breast and enable you to recite it. “So when We recite it, follow its recitation”: when We send it down, listen to it. “Then it is for Us to make it clear”: it is for Us to make it clear through your tongue. He said: Whenever Gabriel, peace be upon him, came to him, he would listen attentively; then, when he had departed, he would recite it as Allah, exalted is He, had promised him.

Muhammad ibn Isma‘il also narrated it from ‘Abdullah ibn Musa, from Isra’il, from Musa ibn Abi ‘A’ishah, through this chain of transmission. He said: Whenever the revelation descended upon him, he would move his lips, fearing that it might escape him. He was therefore told, “Do not move your tongue with it.” “It is for Us to gather it”—that is, to gather it in your breast (1)—“and to recite it”—that is, to enable you to recite it.

Regarding His saying, “But no! You love the fleeting life and neglect the Hereafter,” the people of Medina and Kufa recited both verbs in the second person: “you love” and “you neglect.” The others recited them in the third person, meaning that they prefer this world to the Hereafter and act for its sake—namely, the disbelievers of Mecca. According to the reading in the second person, the sense is: Say to them, O Muhammad, “Rather, you love [and neglect]” (2).

“On that Day”—meaning the Day of Resurrection—“there will be radiant faces.” Ibn ‘Abbas said: Beautiful. Mujahid said: Joyful. Ibn Zayd said: Blissful. Muqatil said: ⦗180b⦘ White, with light shining upon them. Al-Suddi said: Shining. Yaman said: Bright. Al-Farra’ said: Glowing with bliss (3). In Arabic usage, one may say, “May Allah make his face radiant”; likewise, it is said that Allah made his face radiant, or that his face became radiant and resplendent. Allah Most High says: “You will recognize on their faces the radiance of bliss.” (al-Mutaffifin, 24)

“Looking at their Lord.” Ibn ‘Abbas said: Most people will behold their Lord directly, without a veil. Al-Hasan said: They will look upon the Creator, and they have every right to be radiant (4) while looking upon the Creator.

Abu Bakr ibn Abi al-Haytham al-Turabi informed us; ‘Abdullah ibn Ahmad al-Hamawi informed us; Ibrahim ibn Khuzaym informed us.

(3) Maʻani al-Quran by al-Farra, 3:212. (4) In both manuscripts, it is written with the letter za; the correct reading is that established here, since it derives from nadarah (freshness or radiance), not nazar (looking).
