Tafsir al-BaghawiAl-Baghawi

“So today he has here no devoted friend, nor any food except from ghislīn, which none but the sinners will eat. So I swear by what you see and by what you do not see.” (35–39)

“Indeed, he did not believe in Allah, the Magnificent, nor did he urge the feeding of the poor”: he would not feed the poor in this world, nor would he instruct his household to do so. “So today he has here no devoted friend”—that is, no relative who can benefit him or intercede for him. “Nor any food except from ghislīn”: this is the purulent discharge of the people of the Fire. The word is derived from washing, as though it were the washings of their wounds and sores. Al-Dahhak and al-Rabi‘ said: “It is a tree from which the people of the Fire will eat.” “Which none but the sinners will eat”—that is, the disbelievers. “So I swear”: the word “no” is a rejection of what the polytheists say, as though He were saying: “It is not as the polytheists claim; I swear...”
