“Their eyes will be humbled, humiliation will cover them; for they had been called to prostrate while they were sound.” (43)
“His eyes will be humbled”: this is because the believers will raise their heads from prostration with faces whiter than snow, while the faces of the disbelievers and hypocrites will turn black. “Humiliation will cover them”: that is, the humiliation of remorse and regret will overwhelm them. “For they had been called to prostrate”: Ibrahim al-Taymi said, “That is, to the prescribed prayer through the adhan and iqamah.” Sa'id ibn Jubayr said, “They used to hear hayya ʿala al-falāḥ (come to success), yet they would not respond.” “While they were sound”: that is, healthy, yet they would not come to it.
Ka'b al-Ahbar said: “By Allah, this verse was revealed only concerning those who stay behind from the congregational prayers.”
