“Lodge them where you yourselves dwell, according to your means; and do not harm them so as to make life difficult for them. If they are pregnant, then spend on them until they deliver their burdens. Then, if they nurse the child for you, give them their payment, and consult together honourably. But if you find matters difficult between yourselves, then another woman will nurse the child for him. (6)”
“That” refers to the rulings He has mentioned: “That is the command of Allah, which He has sent down to you. Whoever fears Allah, He will expiate his evil deeds and greatly magnify his reward.”
“Lodge them” means the women whom you have divorced. “Where you yourselves dwell”: the word “from” is supplementary; that is, lodge them where you dwell. “According to your means” means according to your capacity and ability. That is, if he is affluent, he should provide her generously with lodging and maintenance; and if he is poor, then according to his ability. “Do not harm them”: do not hurt them, “so as to make life difficult for them” in their dwellings, causing them to leave. “If they are pregnant, then spend on them until they deliver their burdens”—and thereby leave their waiting period.
