the minbar, picked them up, and placed them before him. Then he said: “Allah has spoken the truth: ‘Your wealth and your children are but a trial.’ I looked at these two little boys as they walked and stumbled, and I could not restrain myself until I interrupted my sermon and picked them up.” (1)
“So fear Allah as much as you are able; listen, obey, and spend—it is better for yourselves. Whoever is protected from the avarice of his own soul—it is they who will prosper. (16) If you lend Allah a goodly loan, He will multiply it for you and forgive you. And Allah is Most Appreciative, Most Forbearing, (17) Knower of the unseen and the seen, the Almighty, the All-Wise. (18)”
“So fear Allah as much as you are able”—that is, as much as you can bear. This verse abrogates His saying, Exalted is He: “Fear Allah as He should be feared” [Al Imran 3:102]. “Listen and obey”: Allah and His Messenger. “And spend—it is better for yourselves”: spend from your wealth for your own good. “Whoever is protected from the avarice of his own soul”: such that he gives from his wealth what is due to Allah. “It is they who will prosper.”
