Tafsir al-BaghawiAl-Baghawi

make my son like this man.” The child left the breast, turned toward him, and looked at him, saying, “O Allah, do not make me like him.” Then he turned back to his mother’s breast and began nursing again. The narrator said: It is as though I can see the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, describing the child’s nursing by placing his index finger in his mouth and sucking it.

He said: They then passed by a slave girl whom they were beating, saying, “You have committed fornication and stolen!” while she said, “Allah is sufficient for me, and He is the best Disposer of affairs.” His mother said, “O Allah, do not make my son like her.” He stopped nursing, looked at her, and said, “O Allah, make me like her.” At that point, they spoke further. She said, “A man of fine appearance passed by, and I said, ‘O Allah, make my son like him,’ but you said, ‘O Allah, do not make me like him.’ Then they passed by this slave girl, beating her and saying, ‘You have committed fornication and stolen!’ So I said, ‘O Allah, do not make my son like her,’ but you said, ‘O Allah, make me like her.’”

He replied, “That man was a tyrant, so I said, ‘O Allah, do not make me like him.’ As for this girl, they say to her, ‘You have committed fornication,’ though she has not committed fornication, and, ‘You have stolen,’ though she has not stolen. Therefore, I said, ‘O Allah, make me like her.’” (1)

“O you who believe, fear Allah, and let every soul look to what it has sent ahead for tomorrow. And fear Allah; surely Allah is fully aware of what you do. (18) And do not be like those who forgot Allah, so He made them forget themselves. Those are the defiantly disobedient. (19) The people of the Fire and the people of Paradise are not equal. It is the people of Paradise who are the successful. (20) Had We sent down this Quran upon a mountain, you would have seen it humbled and splitting apart from fear of Allah. Such are the parables We set forth for people, so that they may reflect. (21)”

Allah, exalted is He, says: “O you who believe, fear Allah, and let every soul look to what it has sent ahead for tomorrow”—meaning, for the Day of Resurrection; that is, let each of you consider what he has sent forth for himself: a righteous deed that will save him, or an evil deed that will destroy him. “And fear Allah; surely Allah is fully aware of what you do.” “And do not be like those who forgot Allah”—they abandoned Allah’s command—“so He made them forget themselves,” [that is, their own interests], (2) until they sent no good ahead for themselves. “Those are the defiantly disobedient.”

“The people of the Fire and the people of Paradise are not equal. It is the people of Paradise who are the successful.”
