‘Abd al-Wahid al-Mulayhi informed us; Ahmad ibn ‘Abd Allah al-Nu‘aymi informed us; Muhammad ibn Yusuf informed us; Muhammad ibn Isma‘il narrated to us, from Muhammad ibn Yusuf, who said: Sufyan narrated to us, from Mansur, from Ibrahim, from ‘Alqamah, from ‘Abd Allah, who said:
“Allah has cursed women who tattoo and those who have themselves tattooed; women who pluck facial hair and those who have their teeth separated for beauty, altering Allah’s creation.”
This reached a woman of Banu Asad named Umm Ya‘qub, so she came and said, “I have heard that you have cursed such-and-such women.” He replied, “Why should I not curse those whom the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, cursed, when this is in the Book of Allah, Most High?” She said, “I have read all that lies between the two covers, yet I did not find in it what you say.” He said, “Had you read it, you would indeed have found it. Have you not read: ‘Whatever the Messenger gives you, take it; and whatever he forbids you, refrain from it’ (al-Hashr 7)?” She said, “Yes.” He said, “Then he has forbidden it.” (1)
“And fear Allah. Indeed, Allah is severe in punishment.”
Then He clarified who has a right to the fay’ property, saying: “For the poor emigrants who were driven from their homes and possessions, seeking bounty...”
“For the poor emigrants who were driven from their homes and their possessions, seeking bounty from Allah and His pleasure, and supporting Allah and His Messenger—it is they who are the truthful.” (8)
“For the poor emigrants who were driven from their homes and their possessions, seeking bounty”—that is, provision—“from Allah and His pleasure.” That is, they departed for the abode of emigration seeking Allah’s good pleasure. “And supporting Allah and His Messenger—it is they who are the truthful”: that is, truthful in their faith.
Qatadah said: These are the Emigrants who left behind their homes, possessions, and clans, and went forth out of love for Allah and His Messenger. They chose Islam despite the hardship they endured, such that we have been told that a man would tie a stone to his stomach to strengthen his back against hunger, and in winter a man would make himself a small pit, having no covering other than it. Muhammad ibn al-Hasan al-Marwazi informed us; Abu al-‘Abbas al-Tahhan informed us; Abu Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn Quraysh (3) ibn Sulayman informed us; ‘Ali ibn ‘Abd al-‘Aziz al-Makki informed us; Abu ‘Ubayd al-Qasim ibn Sallam informed us; ‘Abd al-Rahman ibn Mahdi narrated to me, from Sufyan, from Abu Ishaq, from Umayyah ibn Khalid ibn ‘Abd Allah ibn Usayd, from the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, that he would seek victory through the impoverished Emigrants. Abu ‘Ubayd said: This is how ‘Abd al-Rahman related it, but in my view it is Umayyah ibn ‘Abd Allah ibn Khalid ibn Usayd. (4)
