—with one man accompanying him; another prophet with two men; another prophet with a small group; and a prophet with no one accompanying him. Then I saw a great multitude filling the horizon, and I hoped that they were my community. But I was told, ‘This is Moses among his people.’ Then I was told, ‘Look,’ and I saw a great multitude filling the horizon. Then I was told, ‘Look this way and that way,’ and I saw a great multitude filling the horizon. It was said, ‘These are your community, and among them are seventy thousand who will enter Paradise without reckoning.’
The people then dispersed, without its having been explained to them. So the Companions of the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, discussed it and said, ‘As for us, we were born in polytheism, but we believed in Allah and His Messenger. Perhaps they are our children.’ This reached the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, and he said: ‘They are those who do not seek omens, do not ask others to perform ruqyah for them, do not seek cauterization, and place their trust in their Lord.’
Ukashah ibn Mihsan stood and asked, ‘O Messenger of Allah, am I among them?’ He said, ‘Yes.’ Then another man stood and asked, ‘Am I among them?’ He said, ‘Ukashah has beaten you to it.’ (1)
Abd Allah ibn Masud also narrated from the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, that he said: ‘The prophets and their followers were shown to me tonight, until Moses came before me amid a dense throng of the Children of Israel. When I saw them, I was impressed, and I said, “My Lord, who are these?” It was said, “This is your brother Moses and those of the Children of Israel who are with him.” I said, “My Lord, where is my community?” I was told, “Look to your right,” and behold, the hills of Mecca were filled with people. It was said, “These are your community. Are you pleased?” I said, “My Lord, I am pleased; my Lord, I am pleased.” Then I was told, “Look to your left,” and behold, the horizon was filled with people. It was said, “These are your community. Are you pleased?” I said, “My Lord, I am pleased.” Then it was said, “Among these are seventy thousand who will enter Paradise without reckoning.” The Prophet of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: “If you are able to be among the seventy, then be among them. If you are unable and fall short, then be among the people of the hills; and if you are unable, then be among the people of the horizon, for I saw there a great many people jostling one another.”’ (2)
Abd al-Wahid al-Mulayhi informed us; Ahmad ibn Abd Allah al-Nuaymi informed us; Muhammad ibn Yusuf informed us; Muhammad ibn Ismail related to us; Muhammad ibn Bashshar related to us; Ghundar related to us; Shubah related to us from Abu Ishaq, from Amr ibn Maymun, from Abd Allah, who said: We were with the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, in a tent, and he said: ‘Would you be pleased to constitute one quarter of the people of Paradise?’ We said, ‘Yes.’ He said, ‘Would you be pleased to constitute one third of the people of Paradise?’ We said, ‘Yes.’ He said: ‘By Him in whose hand is Muhammad’s soul, I hope that you will constitute half of the people of Paradise. That is because none but a Muslim soul will enter Paradise, and among the people of polytheism you are but like a white hair on the hide of a black bull, or like a black hair on the hide of a red bull.’ (3) (4)
